WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes-Barre General Hospital is rated the 12th Best Hospital in the Commonwealth by U.S. News & World Reports.

The health care facility received a “High Performing,” distinction for its care in three areas of adult care including, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart bypass surgery and heart failure.

“I am very proud of the excellent medical care provided by our physicians and clinical team,” Cor Catena, chief executive officer of Commonwealth Health said in a written press release. “I appreciate the confidence the community has placed in us by entrusting us with their medical care.”

U.S. News & World Reports annual hospital rating included a sample of 2,265 nationwide hospitals that met one of four standards.

Those standards are:

• teaching hospitals;

• hospitals with a medical school affiliation;

• hospitals with 200 or more beds set up and staffed; or

• “100 or more beds set up and staffed plus availability of at least four services that include PET/CT scanner and other high-precision radiation therapies,” according to U.S. News & World Reports.

Wilkes-Barre General Hospital has 374 beds. The facility had 58,533 emergency room visits and 17,245 admissions this year. Also, “physicians performed 4,587 inpatients and 8,289 outpatient surgeries,” according to the survey’s findings.
