Crestwood, Dallas to face familiar foes in 1st round
The brackets for the state field hockey playoffs were filled Saturday as
Crestwood and Dallas each learned its first-round opponentIn both cases, it
will be a familiar foe.
Crestwood and Dallas will play in a doubleheader at Artillery Park in
Kingston in Tuesday’s first round. The order of play and starting times will
be announced Monday. In each case, the District 2 champ will take on the
fourth-place team from District 3.
Crestwood, the District 2 Class AAA champ, gets a rematch with Ephrata in
its first-round game. The Big Red Machine lost to Ephrata, 4-2, in last year’s
AAA state quarterfinals.
The Comets were embarrassed by their showing against Ephrata last year.
They fell behind 4-0 before scoring two late goals to make the game seem
closer. Still, it was their worst playoff loss since 1981.
Crestwood, admittedly, was not ready for that contest and made a vow after
it to be prepared for every opponent. The Big Red Machine has made good on
that commitment this season, defeating all 20 opponents it has faced by a
combined score of 105-1.
Ephrata lost District 3’s AAA third-place consolation game Saturday to
Manheim Township, 2-0, in Lancaster. Ephrata is 10-8-2, but has played an
extremely tough schedule and figures to be a quality foe.
The same goes for Twin Valley, the team Dallas will play in the first round
of the AA state playoffs.
Dallas, 14-3 and the District 2 AA champ, faced Twin Valley in the first
round in 1992 and won 4-1. Actually, Dallas trailed most of that game before
breaking loose for four late goals to put the game away. Twin Valley does have
veterans who played in that game on its current roster.
Twin Valley, 13-8, lost in Saturday’s District 3 AA third-place consolation
game to Reading Central Catholic, 2-0. As is the case with Ephrata, Twin
Valley is a solid team that has played a tough schedule during the course of
the season.
The other District 2 entry in the state playoffs is Tunkhannock, 16-2 and
the Class AA runner-up. It’s already been decided that Tunkhannock and North
Allegheny will square off at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in a first-round game in State
College.
Here are the first-round pairings, listed how they appear in the brackets
