20 YEARS AGO – 1994

After a month of intense competition, Lake-Lehman High School ping-pong players Bob Ayre, Jarrod Baranowski and Joe Matysik have won the top three places in the school’s annual tournament.

At the Lake Silkworth Area Lions’ recent dinner meeting at the Red Rooster Restaurant, Pikes Creek. John C. Link III, “Student of the Quarter” at Lake-Lehman High School was presented a certificate in recognition of outstanding school and community achievement.

Dallas resident Frank Spencer will perform the role of Aeneas in the opera “Dido and Aenaes” which is being presented by The Wilkes University Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance at the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts this Saturday.

30 YEARS AGO – 1984

Entre Computer Center demonstrated the Robotic Turtle Computer Program to the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades of the Gate of Heaven School. The purpose of the program was to reinforce the importance of learning through computerization. Some of the children participating in the program were: Maria Hosey, Brian Ginochetti, Patricia Grenier, David Cybuck, Stacey Traver, Carolyn McLaughlin, Joane Smith, Amy Cutter, Anna Berezich, Frank Spencer, Robert Skursky, Sean Shay and Judy Lemmond.

Students from the Nursery School at the Trucksville United Methodist Church recently toured the office of Dental Associates, Carverton Road. The tour was arranged to familiarize students with the techniques used in a modern dental office. Participants included Erin Rother, Forrest Cummings, Jackie Youells, Brian Tupper, Carson Hawke, Lindsay Kravitz, Lora Jones, Amy Frederick, David Bell, Christopher Groff, Nicole Wenrick, Eddie Pukara, Jesse Miller, A.J. Shaver, Tara Pattridge, Kristin Goodman and Jeanette Humphrey.

40 YEARS AGO – 1974

Several area residents received awards and special recognition at a dinner held recently by Penn Mountains Council, Boy Scouts of America. John Juris, scoutmaster of Troop 281, Dallas, received the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service. Nancy McDonald, den leader, Pack 281, Dallas, received the Silver Fawn award for outstanding service to the scouting program. Gregory Simms, Troop 242, Huntsville, earned the Medal of Merit for saving the life of a cousin from an ice covered farm pond at Lehman Township last winter.

The Gate of Heaven Parent-Teacher Guild recently sponsored a candy sale to raise funds for the school. Student winners of the sales contest included: Lisa Pagliante, David Williams, Betsy Moosic, Marissa Bolinski, Paul Perecone, Joane Andrusik, Debbie Noon, Robert Kliamovich, Jackie Bergevin, Brian Bednar and Shirley Noon.

50 YEARS AGO -1964

The eight teams of Dallas Woman’s Club Bowling League will hold their annual banquet Monday night, at Irem Temple Country Club. Mrs. Harold Brobst is chairman of the affair and committees are as follows: decorations, Mrs. Kenneth Bayliss and Mrs. Ross Lewin; Games, Mrs. Donald Bulford, Mrs. Dan Richards and Mrs. Lester Jordan; prizes and trophies, Mrs. George Payne and Mrs. John Rogers; reservations, Mrs. Lewis J. Reese.

Mrs. Robert Bradley, well-known dance instructor, will serve as one of the models for the Dallas Junior Woman’s Club’s Fashion Show, Tuesday evening at Trucksville Methodist Church Educational Building. Other local models appearing in the hour and a half display of appealing summer fashions are: Mrs. Henry Moyer, Mrs. Robert Richardson, Mrs. O. Van Zimmerman, Mrs. Sheldon Evans, Mrs. Charles Allabaugh and Miss Marlene Lipfert.

Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, has awarded its Sarah Peter Fine Arts European Fellowship to Mrs. Robert Daniels, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Andrew, Shavertown. This award is made annually to a full time graduating illustration and painting student having unconditional status, enrolled at Moore for three consecutive years, who has maintained a junior year average of 2.5 and a senior year average of 3.0 or more.

60 YEARS AGO – 1954

Holy Name Society of Gate of Heaven Church will hold its Mother’s Day breakfast at Beaumont Inn, Kunkle, this Sunday following 9 o’clock mass. William Donachie is chairman, assisted by Fred Youngblood, Jack Anderes, Ed Buckley, John Bush and W.T. Morgan.

Pupils of the elementary grades of Dallas-Franklin Township School will present the operetta, “Sunny,” in the school Friday evening. Leading parts will be taken by the following: Barry Baird, Joanne Joos, Carol Ann Kautz, Dale Mosier, Louis Macknik, Dale Maza, Ronald Trevern, Karen Besteder and Gloria Dolbear.

Junior Woman’s Club will sponsor a Mother and Daughter Tea and Reading at the Dallas Methodist Church Tuesday night. Mrs. John Richards is chairman of the affair, Mrs. Edward Richards, co-chairman.

70 YEARS AGO – 1944

A number of delegates from Dallas Rotary Club and their wives attended the Rotary Convention in Scranton on Monday. Activities of the day included a luncheon, meetings, dinner and a New York floor show. Local people attending: Dr. and Mrs. Robert Bodycomb, Mr. and Mrs. John Nicholson, Mr. and Mrs. John Corliss, Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Griffiths, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Richards, Mr. and Mrs. James Huston, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Warhola, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Payne, Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Richardson and Mr. and Mrs. L.F. Kingsley.

Movies playing at the Shaver Theater, Shavertown, included “Thousands Cheer” starring Katharine Grayson and Gene Kelly; “Happy Land” featuring Don Ameche and Ann Rutherford; and “King of the Cowboys” starring Roy Rogers.
