FAN FARE

This is in regards to the NASCAR caller. Yeah, there is a great difference
between the two sports. First and foremost, baseball is a sport. I don’t know
what NASCAR is. Baseball’s played by premiere athletes from all over the
world. NASCAR’s played by a bunch of overweight southerners who spent too much
time at Pep BoysEditor’s note: While Berwick is south of here, we don’t think
you could call Jimmy Spencer a southerner. Same goes for the 23 other drivers
who are from the northern, midwestern or western regions of the country.
I’m calling about the person whining in (Wednesday’s) Fan Fare about the
Nanticoke kid whose errors were reported. Let me get this straight. You get
mad when you don’t get coverage, and you get mad when you get coverage for
something negative. Look, the kid made an error. The newspaper reported it. So
what? I can’t believe how much people here whine over stupid (stuff). I wish
my only problem in this world were my kid having his error in the paper. Life
would be grand. I guess you always have to complain about something.

Sports fans. Why is Pete Rose being denied entrance into the Hall of Fame?
His accomplishments certainly deserve consideration. All those involved in
drugs, domestic violence, assault on their coach, producing illegitimate
children in professional sports and are still playing and still being
considered for Hall of Fame status. There is something wrong with this
picture.

I was wondering why John Olerud of the Mets wears two helmets. Can you tell
me why?

What David Cone did was wonderful, a masterpiece and unbelievable. The
girls soccer team was great. But the caller has to realize soccer is never
going to catch on in the United States like the rest of the world. A 0-0
soccer game is boring, but a 13-12 soccer game would be boring, too.

I’m calling in regard to a FanFare message in today’s paper about a
basketball player arrested for drugs. These people have their facts wrong.
There were drugs found in the room. No one was arrested. You better make sure
of your facts before you print any of that story.

Well, she called, you printed and now I’m going to comment on it. The local
ambassador once again won’t let it drop and stated that soccer isn’t popular
because we’re just not bright enough to understand it. If you’d take your nose
out of the sky long enough lady and take a look around, you’ll notice not
everybody is as stupid as you think we are. Baseball is a much more cerebral
sport, and I’m not a big fan of baseball. But I’ve watched baseball for a lot
of years, and I’ve watched soccer. And soccer is a boring sport. There is no
strategy. I’m sorry. I understand it. It still sucks.

I’m calling about the FanFare where the person called defending the
shortstop in the picture making the error. I’m the manager of that team, and
also that was my daughter. I don’t think The Times Leader meant any harm or
did anything to embarrass the girl by putting that in the paper. I believe
that they had no other pictures that came out clear. We appreciate the
coverage that The Times Leader gives us. My daughter saw the picture, and it
really didn’t bother her. I appreciate the person who called defending her,
but she wasn’t upset about the picture. One thing about The Times Leader. They
cover the local sports, and we do appreciate. So keep coming and taking those
pictures. Thank you.

Editor’s note: Thanks for your understanding. Just so people are clear
about how we work, the photographer who goes to an assignment comes back and
turns in his/her best photo. Sometimes the photo we use also depends on the
size and shape of the space we allocate for it. Saturday night, when we saw
the photo turned in was a player making an error, we chose not to name the
player. We also pointed out Nanticoke made four errors because that played a
factor in the final score. Much of this work comes down to a judgment call,
sort of like umpiring.

Why doesn’t The Times Leader have more coverage of drag racing locally and
nationally? You got a national champ right in your hometown, and you don’t
even talk about him. It’d be nice to hear a little more about drag racing.
There’s a lot of drag racers in this area. Thank you.

I enjoy your golf page every week. One thing I’d like to suggest is we have
so many good amateur golfers locally, and it’d be nice to have tips from one
of them each week. You could feature one of them every week on a certain part
of the game, like driving and putting. I think the average guy would relate to
some of these amateur golfers who are really good. Thank you.

Editor’s note: Thanks for your input. It’s an interesting idea and we will
consider doing that in the future.
