HAZLETON — Former Hazleton Mayor Mike Marsicano Sunday will announce his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for a seat in the United States Congress representing the 11th Congressional District of Pennsylvania.
The announcement will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the intersection of 9th and Wyoming streets, the site of the former Hazleton Area High School.
U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Hazleton, also a former Hazleton mayor, is serving his third term in Congress representing the 11th District.
When told of Marsicano’s decision, Barletta said he remains focused on serving the people of Pennsylvania’s 11th District.
“The next election is more than a year away, and I remain committed to doing the best job I can for my constituents,” Barletta said. “I am very proud of the job I have done, and when the time comes, I will be proud to run on my record.”
In 2007, Barletta won his third term as mayor of Hazleton. He won the Republican nomination and he also the Democratic nomination with a last-minute write-in campaign against Marsicano, who had served one term as city mayor from 1996-99.
In that primary election, Barletta won more than 1,200 Democratic write-in votes to Marsicano ‘s 741.
