WILKES-BARRE — Baby cobra. Warrior II. Three-legged dog.

These were just some of the poses completed by more than 40 attendees during the hour-long yoga class at Millennium Circle on the the Susquehanna River Commons Saturday.

“Yoga on the River” is a free, bi-weekly yoga class sponsored by the Riverfront Parks Committee. Run by instructor Jennifer Ciarimboli, Yoga on the River has been providing free yoga classes to the community at Millennium Circle for the past six years.

“It’s super friendly for all levels,” Ciarimboli said. “We incorporate yoga techniques that will help beginners to advanced. Anyone can do it.”

The class, which is held every other Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., starts off with simple meditation and stretching. Throughout the hour, it gradually advances into more difficult poses, before returning into ending stretches and meditation at the completion of the class.

Ciarimboli walks around the group while instructing, stopping to assist those struggling with a pose as needed. Often, she will return to the front of the group to demonstrate and explain how the poses work and what parts of the body are helped by them.

“We did a lot of twisting today,” she said during the end of class. “Twisting helps detoxify the body. It massages the liver and kidneys, which helps rid the body of toxins. Make sure to drink lots of water today to help get those toxins out.”

If the poses prove to be too difficult, its nice to just sit and enjoy the scenery. The breeze coming off the Susquehanna makes for just-right weather during the summer’s heat, and the landscape provides a beautiful backdrop to the class. During the class, a flock of geese decided to join in, trying to decide if it was safe to cross paths with people — ultimately deciding to fly into the river instead.

There are two more classes left in the session — Aug. 15 and 29. While the class is free of charge, mats and drinks must be brought by the individual.
