BUTLER TWP. — A quiet Monday night on Old Turnpike Road was interrupted by a blaze that Fire Chief Rich Bognar called “chaotic.”
Bognar, chief of Valley Regional Fire Department, said the investigation of a fire that completely destroyed a garage endangering a nearby home was ongoing. It occurred across the street from Fritzingertown Senior Living Community.
The fire, which had been originally called in as two-alarm blaze and then amended to a one-alarm fire, had been reported at about 7 p.m. and was still flaming at 8:30 p.m.
“Even before we could see the fire, we could smell it,” said one resident who lived nearby.
“We’re waiting for a the road department with a backhoe so we can get this fire completely out,” Bognar said at 8:30 p.m.
The Valley Regional fire crew was assisted by crews from Sugarloaf and Foster townships.
On standby, he said, were crews from Freeland, West Hazleton and Mountain Top.
The names of the owners of the property were not immediately released.
