PLAINS TWP. — Mike Bean, president and general manager of the Mohegan Sun Pocono casino, announced Monday that he is resigning from the company after almost 11 years, having obtained another position.
He will be vacating his current position at the end of the month.
Bean, 51, described his tenure with the company in positive terms, crediting staff members with a professional work ethic that provided an opportunity for growth.
Looking back, he said he is proud of his tenure at the casino since 2005, when he came on board as vice president of administration.
In 2006, he saw the business become the first casino in the Pennsylvania.
“When I got here, it was only a race track,” he said.
In 2010, Bean was named assistant general manager and was promoted to president and general manger in 2012.
The casino has grown rapidly during his watch, becoming a hot spot not only for area residents, but drawing gamers from across the Northeast.
Further growth continued, he said, with the opening of a $50 million hotel and convention center in 2013.
He said it was exciting to see continued expansion throughout the last 11 years.
Bean has overseen major expansion and continued expansion during his tenure at the casino, but said consistently focused on providing a quality experience for visitors.
“We’ve become a part of the community and have consistently focused on our guests,” he said.
Bean said recent incidents of employee thefts, some significant, did not influence his decision.
“That is not something that I want to focus on,” said Bean. “Ninety-nine percent of those who work here have been honest and have done the right thing.”
Bean, originally from Connecticut, holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Bryant College and a Juris Doctorate from Vermont Law School.
Prior to working at the Mohegan Sun, he worked at Harrah’s Entertainment, Boyd Gaming and Foxwoods Report Casino.
He serves on various boards of directors, including the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry, Scranton Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Wyoming Valley, WVIA, Bold Gold Broadcast & Media Foundation and Luzerne County Community College Foundation.
His past board service has included Volunteers of America and the Wilkes-Barre YMCA.
Bean is not yet disclosing his next position, but said he will do so in the near future.
