ASHLEY — The Department of Environmental Protection and thei Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation were on the site of the former Huber Breaker in Ashley on Thursday, clearing debris and making way for a fence which will go up within the next few weeks.

Colleen Connolly, DEP’s community relations coordinator, confirmed the visit.

Earlier in the year a hole opened in the ground on the property of the former coal breaker. The Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation visited the site and found that the hole is “50 to 100 feet deep.”

Connolly said that typically, a court order is needed to go on private property — Paselo Logistics LLC owns the site.

“Because of the safety hazard (of the asbestos), we just went on the property,” Connolly said.

She hopes the work will start within the next few weeks, once bids are put out to build the fence around the hole.
