PLAINS TWP. — A township woman has sued Mohegan Sun Pocono for negligence, claiming she was injured when part of a slot machine toppled onto her head.

Alberta McCarthy alleges in a lawsuit filed in Luzerne County Court last month that the Plains Township casino and hotel failed to maintain its slot machines and should have known the machine was in “a dangerous and defective condition.”

According to the complaint, McCarthy was gambling on Oct. 8 when the top of the slot machine she was using collapsed and struck her in the head, face and right arm, leaving her immediately “dizzy and dazed.” Another part of the machine allegedly fell onto her left foot and ankle.

She further alleges she was “rendered sick, sore, disabled and maintained severe physical and mental pain as well as great discomfort, all of which required medical care.” Her injuries are permanent in nature, she claims.

McCarthy is seeking damages in excess of $50,000. A Mohegan Sun spokesperson did not immediately return a message seeking comment Monday afternoon.
