WILKES-BARRE — City firefighters were working to extinguish a blaze at a vacant apartment building on Old River Road late Wednesday night.

Fire Chief Jay Delaney said crews were dispatched at 9:51 p.m. for the fire at 133-135 Old River Road and arrived to find heavy fire inside the building.

As of 10:30 p.m., firefighters were still working to extinguish flames and finish searching the building, which Delaney described as ‘huge.’

A sign posted in a front window of the building described it as foreclosed upon and bank-owned.

Delaney said Old River Road between Maffett and Eleanor streets would be closed until at least 11:30 p.m. or midnight.

No further information was immediately available.
