WILKES-BARRE — A Luzerne County Transportation Authority bus caught fire while transporting passengers to the intermodal center Friday afternoon.

Driver Taquana Chapman said she had stopped the bus to pick up passengers on Jackson Street near North Washington Street when she noticed smoke in the back of the bus. There were two passengers on the bus at the time, and Chapman got both passengers off the vehicle and called for help.

City firefighters responded and extinguished the fire, which appeared to be in the engine compartment at the rear of the bus.

Chapman said the bus running the Swoyersville route, which also services Forty Fort and Edwardsville. The LCTA dispatched another bus and Chapman continued on the route.
