WILKES-BARRE — The Riverfront Parks Committee will celebrate Earth Day on Friday with a variety of events for school students along the Susquehanna River in Nesbitt Park and the Kirby Park Natural Area.

Classes participating in the program will learn about the importance of riparian forests and the wildlife that inhabits them, discover how to make a positive impact on the watershed with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Connections to Your Watershed program and learn about the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Susquehanna River, migratory birds and mammals of the watershed and much more.

The programs will be for grades 4 through 8. All classes must be well chaperoned, and students should bring a lunch to eat in the park.

For more information or to register your class, call the Penn State Extension at 570-825-1701.

The Earth Day 2017 is made possible wit the support of the Pennsylvania American Water, the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Environmental Council’s Pocono Forests and Waters Conservation Landscape Conservation Assistance Program.

Additional support for this program comes from Penn State Extension, Wilkes-Barre Riverfront Parks Committee, Wilkes University EEES and Biology Departments, King’s College’s environmental program, DCNR Bureau of Forestry and State Parks, Luzerne County and the City of Wilkes-Barre.
