PLAINS TWP. — A reorganization at Mohegan Sun Pocono this week has left seven employees, director level and above, out of a job.
According to Cody Chapman, public relations manager for Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, the reorganization of the Mohegan Sun Pocono management team resulted in the separation of select members of the management team.
“The reorganization is a strategic business decision, includes the elimination of some positions, and will allow the casino to operate more efficiently,” Chapman said in an email. “It is also a reflection of Mohegan Sun Pocono preparing for and responding to external factors such as new gaming options currently being explored in multiple states and competitors’ aggressive promotional programs such as free slot play offers.”
Chapman said the employees were offered severance packages. He said no additional separations are planned at this time. Chapman would not identify which positions were affected.
“I am also only able to share, out of privacy for the individuals, that they were at the management level at this time,” he said.
In April, a report released by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board showed Mohegan Sun Pocono’s gross revenue from slot machines dropped by more than 5 percent compared to 2016.
The Plains Township casino brought in $18,117,124.86 in gross revenue from slot machines during the month, compared to $19,236,060.64 during the same time in 2016 — a 5.5 percent drop.
Statewide slot machine revenue at the Pennsylvania’s 12 casinos was down 1.58 percent to $205,702,752.11 compared to $208,999,688.48 in April 2016.
Mohegan Sun’s drop was the second biggest in the state. Only Presque Isle Downs Casino in Erie had a bigger drop at 6.05 percent.
