Political rhetoric does not always translate into fact. Take, for instance, recent efforts by groups challenging state Sen. John Yudichak on his environmental record.

Our community has firsthand experience to refute such rhetoric. The borough of Ashley has been dealing with problems that arose from the demolition of the Huber Breaker. Sen. Yudichak stepped up to help us address legitimate environmental concerns at the site.

As we have witnessed, the senator has dealt with many other problems in his district. He worked collectively with state Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski and the state Department of Environmental Protection to address these problems and concerns. A few of the measures implemented, or being implemented, by this work group: soil testing by DEP, a fence installation over an abandoned mine shaft by DEP’s Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation, and timely inspections by DEP.

Communication and updates flow freely to borough officials from Sen. Yudichak and his staff regarding the plans to address the issue.

Don’t just take our word for it. We think if you surveyed the residents of Banks Township, in Carbon County, you would find a similar approach taken by Sen. Yudichak in addressing the Jeansville mine fire.

We in Ashley are fortunate enough to be represented in Harrisburg by legislators who work together for the good of our community and our environment. Despite the budget problems in Harrisburg over the past four years, both Sen. Yudichak and Rep. Pashinski managed to secure funds for Ashley. Because of their collective approach, Ashley residents have a new municipal building – without a tax increase.

We extend our appreciation to Sen. Yudichak and Rep. Pashinski for their hard work.

Rhetoric certainly has its place in politics. But the actions of Sen. Yudichak have had a positive impact on our community, and we are grateful for it.
