Caught on Camera

Robert Kuzynski’s trail camera captured this bobcat walking through a wooded area in Waymart on Aug. 5. Even while walking in front of an enormous tree the bobcat appears large. Minus the long tail, it’s understandable how they can be mistaken for mountain lions at times.Capture anything interesting on your hand-held or trail camera? A nice buck, bear, coyote or any other wildlife? We’d love to see it. Each week, we’ll run photos from a reader’s tr...

Review: Shocktoberfest’s Prison of the Dead Escape steals the show and your breath

Shocktoberfest consistently ranks among the country’s best haunts. It stays at the top of its game by innovating each year. New for 2014 is a Zombie Night Run, Zombie Paintball Hayride and the “Almost” Naked and Scared Challenge. But even if Shocktoberfest didn’t have any of those, it’d still be one of our favorite haunts for one reason: Prison of the Dead Escape. It is, unquestionably, the star attraction of Shocktoberfest.

Wilkes art exhibit is tribute to the late faculty member Richard A. Fuller

If the little toy donkey in the painting, the one with the friendly face and the red saddle, catches your eye, you may want to know it was part of artist Bruce Lanning’s childhood, acquired when it came “floating down the creek in my backyard after a heavy rainstorm.”And if you’re wondering why Steve Husted photographed a turquoise bicycle on a boardwalk or a llama that appears to be intrigued by his camera, know that he likes “remembering where I̵...

PSU ground game gets on track to trample UMass

STATE COLLEGE — Bill Belton found the corner. And for the first time in a very long while, there weren’t two or three defenders waiting to meet him.Instead there was just the big, friendly blue jersey of Donovan Smith. With the left tackle in tow, it was almost a leisurely stroll to the end zone. Not at all used to such a sight this year, Belton found himself trying to calm down before he could hit paydirt.“I can’t get too excited,”...

Manhunt, tension go on

CANADENSIS — The suspect in the deadly ambush at a state police barracks in a remote part of northeastern Pennsylvania remained at large for an eighth day Saturday as police appeared to have narrowed their search, largely shutting down the area where he lived with his parents for over 24 hours but leaving neighbors with few answers about what’s going on just outside their front doors. With a helicopter flying overhead, law enforcement officers wearing bulletproof vests a...

George Spohr: NEPA Haunts is your one-stop guide to Halloween attractions

I spent three years as business editor of the Times Herald-Record in New York’s Hudson Valley. I quickly became friends with one of the features writers, Sandy Tomcho, who annually reviewed haunted attractions for the newspaper.Sandy suggested I tag along on one of her review trips.Until that point, I’d only visited low-budget haunted houses or haunted hayrides. Seeing professionally produced haunted attractions was a revelation, and I was instantly hooked. I...
